Oily skin is characterized by overactive sebaceous glands, meaning your skin produces an excess amount of oil (aka sebum) throughout the day. This excess sebum can lead to skin imperfections like enlarged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, acne, and an overall shiny-looking complexion. There are also benefits of having naturally oily skin! The skin's barrier is strong, meaning it retains moisture well and is less prone to signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles.
When choosing products for oily and acne-prone skin, it's important to strike a balance between hydration and oil-management. Anything that is overly drying can irritate acne and cause redness. Ingredients that are antibacterial, calming, and clarifying will treat breakouts. After cleansing, make sure to moisturize! When skin is stripped of natural oils, it'll actually continue to over-produce sebum. By keeping your skin clean and hydrated, oil production will normalize over time.
